Connotations Photo Exercise

We had to plan out different scenarios to take photos of, using different techniques with the camera to control how it looked, and give it the effect suited to the emotion.

This is what we did for "Strength". We used a long shot to get him in the full view, as well as the object that he was lifting. The facial expressions that he is using suggests that he is putting a lot of effort into lifting the object.

One thing that we could have done is given him an easier object to lift, that still looked like it had some weight, so further increase the illusion of strength, as well as made it so that he had light on him.

This is the photo that we took for "Poverty". We did this in a dark alleyway, to suggest that they don't have much hope, and a trash bag to indicate how little someone in poverty would have. We also did this in a high shot, so that it would suggest weakness, which some people in poverty might be portrayed as.

This is the photo that we took for "Love". For love, we decided to go for the iconic image that most people associate with love. The two people are in the center of the photo, to show that they are the main attraction, and the lighting means there is no shadows, keeping it happy, and not introducing a sinister side to the photo.

For "Fear", one of us went into a corner, and crouched down, allowing us to get a high shot, making them look weak. He also put his hood up and curled into a ball, further hinting that he is afraid of something.

"Desire" is shown in this photo as his eyes are looking directly at the camera, and the slit of a smile suggests that he is happy, and enjoying. These can also be linked to 'dreamy' eyes, that some people get when they see something they really want.

Our photo for "Danger" shows someone going to punch someone else. Because danger can usually be linked to violence, this helps show the meaning for the photo. However, it could be misleading, with people believing that it is meant to represent violence, instead of danger.

For "Wealth", we took a photo of an Aldi, as some view them as nice cars, and make links to wealth. Note: I have covered the number plate, because the picture is of someone else's car, and they may not want their number plate on the internet.

"Weakness" is shown in this photo by the fact that he is unable to lift up the bench, which wouldn't have much weight to it. If we were to improve this image, we would make it so that the lighting was used more effectively, and you could see some more details, such as the facial expression.
"Loneliness" is shown in the photo by the fact that he is in the corner all alone, with no one near him. The camera angle is from high up, making him look weak, and he is looking down, further implying that he has no one near him, hence him being alone.
"Friendship" in this photo is shown by two friends 'hugging'. to improve this photo, we could have made it so that both parties were showing a happy face, to show that they were friends.
"Purity" is shown by the blue sky, and the wispy clouds give a tranquil feel to the picture. As nothing else is in the photo, the clean feel gives the feeling of purity.
"Greed is shown by the person in the photo downing a bottle of water, with nothing being left.

This concludes the connotations photo exercise.
